Halitosis is the technical term for “bad breath.” Bad breath can be a result of poor oral habits, but it can also be a symptom of a more serious health problem. When patients are experiencing bouts of persistent foul-smelling breath, they should visit their dentist to determine the underlying cause of their problem.

There are many causes of chronic bad breath. The most common include poor oral hygiene habits and untreated gum disease. When the mouth is not cleaned properly and plaque is allowed to accumulate on the teeth and gums, it will lead to the development of cavities and tooth decay. The bacteria that thrive in the mouth of a person who has poor oral health will begin to emit a foul odor when the food particles they release are broken down by the body’s enzymes. In addition to causing bad breath, these bacteria can also cause gum inflammation and infection, which can eventually lead to tooth loss.

If the teeth and gum tissues become infected due to bacteria growth in the mouth, this can lead to the occurrence of more serious concerns, like periodontal disease. This disease affects the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth. When it progresses to an advanced stage, it can cause bone loss and permanent tooth loss. Treatment of advanced cases may require tooth extractions.

Other common health conditions that cause chronic bad breath include sinus infections and postnasal drip. For patients with chronic bad breath, the best treatment is often regular checkups and cleanings at the dentist’s office. True cases of halitosis will require additional treatments to resolve the underlying health issue.

Proper brushing and flossing can remove the food particles that lead to the formation of bacteria and plaque in the mouth. Rinsing the mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash can also help reduce the population of bad-breath-causing microbes in the mouth. Visiting the dentist for regular cleanings and exams can also help maintain good oral health and lower the risk of serious health issues.

Is wearing your mask to prevent Covid-19 is causing bad breath?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many preventative measures have been put in place to prevent the spread of the virus. While wearing your mask to prevent the spread of the virus is important, it can also cause bad breath. This is because when you wear your mask, it prevents your mouth from breathing properly. Since your mouth isn’t getting enough oxygen, it results in bad breath.
